Roofing ventilation, combined with proper installation, is a critical component for climate control of your home during ALL months, promoting continuous airflow in your home that promotes increased climate control and greatly reduces risk of excessive attic moisture buildup that can be destructive to your home and health.
A Ridge Vent is a relatively inexpensive, GREEN fix that will save you significant costs over the lifetime of your roof. A Ridge Vent is a long strip of ventilated material that is installed along the peak of your roof in place of the normal layers of roofing materials that run throughout the rest of the roof’s surface. This one-way vent allows hot air to escape from your attic, but it does not allow the outside elements or animals into the roof. A Ridge Vent works with your home’s soffit (ventilated roof overhang along part of the perimeter of your home) to let cool air in and keep the hot air moving up and out of your attic. Click the picture to watch a video to see how Ridge Vent installation can improve airflow in your home. When installing a ridge vent in your roof, it is essential that your soffit ventilation is inspected at the same time. In order for the ridge vent to work properly and maintain the hot air flowing out of your attic, it requires cooler, heavier air intake from the soffit to fill the lower portion of the attic and gradually push the warmer air upward and out of the ridge vent. If your home does not have adequate soffit, then a ridge vent might not be an appropriate option for you.
1. Hot air rises. Nature’s laws cause hot air to rise in an enclosed space (your home).
2. Hot air is trapped. Without proper ventilation, this air has no way to escape, and remains trapped near the ceiling and/or in the attic of your home.
3. Moisture/condensation builds. Not only can such heat buildup can make living conditions unbearable, but it can also cause moisture buildup in the ceiling and walls that separate the trapped hot air from cooler air. Just as when you place a glass of cold water in the hot sun, condensation forms on the glass, so does condensation build within your roof and drywall, greatly increasing your risk of mold growth and roof wood damage or failure over time.

2. Inefficient Energy Use
3. Eventual Weakening and Rotting of Sheathing/Rafters
4. Ice Dams (in Winter)
